                              ON-CAMPUS  VS. OFF-CAMPUS LIVING :

It's the question that every college student must answer: should they live on-campus or off-campus? Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, so it is crucial for students to weigh the choices before making a final decision.  Here are some pros and cons of living on-campus and off-campus for you and your student to consider.

On-Campus

Pros

• Accessibility to the college: - If you live on-campus, you can easily walk to classes, libraries, computer labs, cafeterias, etc. You don't have to waste time and money on driving to college, finding a parking space, and so forth. Also, there is plenty of parking available for every residential student in their own assigned residential lots. No more fighting for those coveted commuter spaces.

• Increased social life: - Living on-campus will allow you to meet more people and establish more friendships than if you live off-campus. Living in a residence hall means that there will always be someone around to hang out with. You will also be more aware of any campus activities and how to be involved in them.

• Convenience: - Everything you need is located either on campus or very nearby. Why spend precious moments you could be using to study sitting in a traffic jam?

• Less privacy: - When living in a residence hall, it can be more challenging to maximize privacy. While you will most likely have your own bedroom (particularly in the upper-class accommodations), you may still have to share a bathroom and common space. If you are someone who values complete privacy or you need absolute quiet to study, this may be more challenging for you.

• Limited space: - At most colleges, the residence hall rooms are on the smaller size and there is little storage space at your disposal. You have to limit what you bring to college, or your space will be too crowded. That means you have to economize and you may have to change out your wardrobes between seasons. 

• Independence: - You will not have to follow as many rules if you live off-campus. Residence halls have several rules that students must abide by when living on-campus. (These rules are usually designed for the overall protection and safety of the residents). Living off-campus will give you freedom from those rules and allow you to set your own.

• Space: - Living off-campus means that you will be more likely to have a larger bedroom and more storage space. This can make your personal space more attractive, and can make staying in your room to study a little less claustrophobic. If you can afford to do so, you may even have the option of getting an apartment to yourself. This will give you ultimate privacy and seclusion.

• Sense of responsibility: Living off-campus will help you be more responsible. If you live off-campus, you will be in charge of paying bills, cleaning house, grocery shopping, and cooking. Being responsible is a good quality to possess (in case you consider this one a con).

• More expensive: - Often times, off-campus housing is more expensive than on-campus housing. Utilities and cable can be an added monthly expense, and you may have to pay for your own Internet access. You will also need to buy furniture, kitchen essentials, bath necessities, cleaning supplies, etc., which can be a hefty start-up cost.

• Lease limitations: - You will typically be required to commit to a full 12-month lease in most apartment communities. If you value going home to live with your family to save money in the summer, this can be problematic. Many apartments won’t give you the ability to sublease.

• Transportation: - When living off-campus, it may not be convenient for you to walk to campus so you would have to find transportation. Whether you drive your car or use a form of public transportation, it is still going to cost you money. Traffic can also be an issue if you live in a crowded area.

• Isolation: - If you live off-campus, you may not be as involved with campus activities as you would if you lived on-campus. This could cause you to feel a sense of detachment with your college and cause you to not make as many friends.

Delhi University

#1. In 1922 when the University was first established there were only three colleges (St. Stephens, Hindu and Ramjas College) with two faculties of Arts and Science and 750 students. #1. BITS PILANI has campuses at Pilani, Hyderabad, Goa and Dubai and all these campuses are interconnected through BITS CONNECT 2.0 – a million dollar project. This allows a student from the Hyderabad campus to not only attend lectures at Pilani but can also able to interact online and can ask live questions, which is something happening for the first time in India. This is a perfect combination of remote learning and participatory coursework with remote recruitment and collaborative research.

#2. The alumni participation in the development of the institute has been ever increasing since the inception of BITSAA. Anticipation of meeting new people,the confusion of a new environment, the anxiety of the amount of work to do and perhaps the excitement of preparing your future. Those of us who are college veterans will never forget our freshman year at college. Some of us may like to forget our freshman year ,but in general it is a time filled with an anticipation, some anxiety, and wonderful discoveries.

For faculty, each year is a new beginning; new faces, new energy, and new discussions differ for many of these first-time students.

College is definitely a whole different ballgame compared to high school. Everyone has told you and you have probably spent the last two months of summer break psyching yourself up for the moment you walk on campus. But the truth is college is totally different. Classes are all throughout the day, you have no one telling you what to do in your free time, and of course, classes are everywhere across the campus. No one wants to end up walking around the campus.

When the first day of classes arrives, gives yourself enough time to shower,drink coffee, and perform all your other morning rituals. You're going to be excited and a little nervous about your first class, which is totally natural. Just stay calm and you will make it through the day. And ask for help when you need it: every student on campus has experienced what you are going through , and they will all be able to guide you through your first day.

The college experience is one that holds many pleasant memories, you may begin the journey as a scared mice, out in the open desert but make the best of it and trudge forward becoming a 'willful tiger'.

Make your first day with some of the good memories because it will not get back again ever.

Getting into my dream college LSR’ had always been a far-fetched dream; a dream you often dream but never dream of it ever coming true. With the sky-rocketing cut-off’s and the hype that the boards are, assured me that i will never be able to make it. After a long and exhaustive period of vacations that were spent in anxiety and fear, one morning, CBSE, FINALLY decided to release our board results. Chills ran down my spine as the realisation struck me. THIS WAS IT. My destiny stood right in front of me. I gathered the guts and logged on to CBSE’s site. The internet had never taken this long. It seemed as though the gods were also having their bit of fun. What made the situation even worse were the incessant phone calls by the relatives and peers who had been long forgotten. Finally, the page loaded. My marks were right in front of me. To my, amazement. I had surpassed everyone's expectations. 97.25%! WOAH. They were way above my predictions. I was elated. I do not remember being as happy as i was that morning. But, the suspense still continued. The cutoffs were yet to be released. After a long wait, the cutoffs were released and to my stupefaction, i got into LSR in the first list itself. All this felt surreal. A dream that i had never thought of coming true, had been achieved.

On July 1,2015, i finally got the first opportunity to enter the gates of LSR. We were made to stand in queue outside the college. At 9am sharp the gates were opened and we all ran inside. This was a little hysterical. It seemed as though birds locked in a cage for years had finally been freed. On reaching the auditorium we were reassured by our college president. Everything was well planned and organised. After filling up the college forms we were sent to different rooms for other important formalities. I was pleasantly greeted by my department faculty and the president of the department. After a short interview with them i was sent to pay the fee and finally a photo was clicked for my identity card; a card that would now be a treasured possession for the rest of my life.

JULY 17th, was my first day at college. The memories of which are so vividly entrenched that i can narrate them in a wink of an eye. I woke up quite early, took a shower, had some nice breakfast and then got ready as quickly as possible, to avoid getting late. I was welcomed by a big bunch of friendly faces of fellow students, and many very friendly and helpful staff members were around to guide us around the building and tell us where we should be. The first morning in itself was very organised. The department welcomed us by performing various dances and songs. We also had an introductory talk by the principal, welcoming us to Lady Shri Ram College, and explaining what we should expect over the next several months we are going to spend as a part of the LSR family. The talk by my principal was one of the highlights of my first day at college. She really lifted up my spirits and made me proud of being an LSRian. We were shown the campus and were also asked to plant a sapling, after which we had a meeting with the faculty and the union of the department. The faculty introduced themselves and asked us if we had any queries or doubts. All queries were addressed adequately.

There were quite a few breaks during the morning to give me a chance to talk to a my fellow students, so when we were told to break up for lunch, I already had a new friend to go have refreshments with. We spent an hour or so getting to know each other, and we even got a couple of people to join us, so we immediately felt much less nervous about the whole “first day at a new college” thing. It was lovely to chat with someone who was in the same boat as me.

After the tour was over, we were free to go wherever we wanted to – this meant grabbing coffee with one of my new friends and chatting for another hour or so. So, as you can see, all in all, the first day of college really is nothing to be worried about. First of all, most of the things that you will be doing are administrative in nature, and all the rest is just socialising and having fun with your new class-mates. Trust me; my first day in college did not even approach the scariness that I had managed to build in my head by the time it arrived! And I am sure; it will be the same for you!

With sophisticated clean gardens, old tall green palm trees covered under the shadows of nature, college is blessed with beauty. With so many trees, not a single shredded leaf was to be seen anywhere. Even with so much of heat the Campus maintains its charm and beauty of its lush green lawns of the Herbal garden, especially the front lawn of the college which is as green as anything can be!

If you look at the entire campus of the College, it is definite that you would sense a subtle , proud feeling. The college is as serene as watching an old English lavish palace with impeccable architecture and foliage all around, almost similar to that of a classic British movie.

Not just this, College has the best flora and fauna resources in its campus. The college, besides students and faculty, is home to many migratory birds too. The only reason for this bird to find home in this campus is due to its magical verdure.
