#Guide to #smooth #college #life by Asmita Sharma

#Guide to #smooth #college #life

Don’t be afraid of new places or new faces, they’ll become familiar one day.

You have bid farewell to your school life and this change is knocking on your door. Are you scared to open the door?

You have spent life under surveillance, carried heavy school bags around for years and now you are looking forward to this new change. School is a relatively confined space; you were guided, protected and controlled. It’s a big change and you are probably wondering how is it going to be like, how will you gel with new people with different tastes, knowledge and interest. It takes time to adjust to the new schedule, new people and if you are worried about it and want a smooth college start here are few advices. (I WISH I FOLLOWED THEM)

Expect less.
That’s the mantra for a happy life and happy college days.

Hindi films have constructed image of college as an extremely happening place, where people are dancing and singing pointlessly. I hope you know story on screen remains on screen only. College isn’t only about fun, it’s also about attending classes, doing projects, exams and yes people will dance but only on fests and fresher parties.  College can be boring at times and but you will have a good time with friends.

Make friends but take it easy.

Make friends, interact with people but take your own time don’t be too excited.

I don’t want to say that judge people rate them and then make friends but keep some distance.

Don’t end up posting pictures on the first day on instagram saying
“#newfoundbestie#” “#bestfriendsforever”.

Make good connections with your seniors.

Your own batch mates are going to stick till the end but the seniors might help your drowning boat.

Talk to your seniors, they’ll tell you different strategies to survive in college and might help you with notes and internships too.

Don’t grab beers to impress peers.

You don’t need to start smoking or drinking or change your tastes and interest just to fit in the group circle.

People will like you for who you are and if they don’t then don’t run after them.

Better be different than to imitate for acceptance.

Don’t freak out.

College isn’t fun? You can’t settle? Just relax.

You are going to be alright.  Change is challenging sometimes. May be the course is not as per your expectations, may be you have made no friends but just give it some time.

Discuss your issues with your friends, family or teachers. Ask for help if you need it.  If you ever have confidence issues, always remember everybody is as bad as you are. (JUST KIDDING)

Discover and go beyond your canteen.

Your canteen might become your favorite spot but there are a lot of roadside shops, local restaurants and cafes, TRY ALL OF THEM. Be it south campus north campus or any off campus college, you will find amazing local food shops.

I have spent my afternoons in canteens of far off colleges just for an amazing sambhar dosa and cold coffees. It’s worth it.

Try new things and participate.

Don’t just stick around in your classrooms. College life would provide you ample time to go beyond your class rooms. Join some college society or join some hobby classes, learn stuff and participate in competitions. This time won’t come back so utilize it and learn; you can also try and work on your wish list.

Study, at least try.

Remember exams, assignments are important! Stay regular, submit assignments on time and prepare for exams. Yes it’s tough but you need to study a little too. You probably won’t have text books which will give you all answers; you’ll have to make your own notes (SIGH).
You can’t make notes? Chill

Look around, someone would be scribbling and making notes, ask them for help. We all hate Studies but we can’t help it.

Stick around with people, you might find great friends.

Keep it easy, don’t be too rigid, go with the flow and enjoy with your friends.

Some people find it hard to adjust or they often jump from groups to groups because they are unsure.

Talk to everybody, be close to few.

It is going to fine. At any point you feel helpless… its 2:00 am and you are procrastinating before your exam day; ALWAYS REMEMBER …

#Experience working with #University #Community #Radio 90.4 MHz - Ruchika Singh

EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH DUCR 90.4 MHz

Being a Journalism (H.) student, working with DELHI UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY RADIO, DUCR 90.4 MHz was like a dream come true.

DUCR was established in 2007, is a Community Radio Station situated inside the University stadium, University of Delhi.

It was inaugurated by Sh. Kapil Sibal, then Honourable Minister of Science & Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences, Government of India on 2 October 2007 emphasized that the larger participation of faculty and students will strengthen the DUCR and make it popular among the community residing in and around University Campus.

In early days of broadcasting some experts and professional presenters were involved but after getting matured enough, now Community Radio Station is managed by the students of University of Delhi as directed by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Dinesh Singh, DUCR is functioning under the supervision of R.K Singh Consultant, DUCR (Technical and Program) former Engineer-in-Chief of Doordarshan.

The main thrust area of DUCR 90.4 MHz is to broadcast student centric community based programmes. In addition to these programmes, music and songs are also introduced into it to make programme more interesting. DUCR is very careful about the proper proportion of education, information and entertainment in the broadcasting programme.

Some special programmes were also introduced time to time as per the requirements like in 2008; the University started using the station for disseminating information about the admission process, through live phone-in programs in admission season.

In the month of March 2014 the whole journey of Gyanodaya Express - An Educational Train Journey of University of Delhi was covered by the media team of DUCR consisting of students only.

As per the growing popularity and demand of the listeners, DUCR is available on DU Intranet and Internet also.

Going on Air was like experiencing an RJ. Kudos to Delhi University for such an effort towards Broadcasting.

My #Freshmen #Year by Grishma Srivastava

My Freshmen Year.

My first year in University of Delhi was like a roller coaster ride full of surprises, ups and downs, love, adventures and fear.

Getting into DU was like a dream come true, I always dreamt of studying into this kind of university. Being an outstation student it was a bit more difficult for me than all the Delhiites.

The Cut-off Day came and I was through.. Yippiee!!!! Now it was simple for me.. Book tickets and the campus walk as a DU FUCHA was not far away.

But it was not that easy. Trains. Reservations. Well Well. Almost whole India can tell you about the great mystery of booking railway tickets. And as it happened Here comes the twist

No reservation???

So what

The passion to be a part of Delhi University was enough to keep me motivated throughout the journey.

I somehow managed to reach Delhi from Lucknow, the city of Nawabs (without reservation). This journey on track is unforgettable as I kept hopping across the train for seat.

Reached Delhi and here was the day to complete my admission formalities.

After standing in a long never ending line I got in. the college was opening on the 21st July. I was excited and scared.  Scared by the fact that Ill get ragged, I didn't know what they will do to me. But deep inside I was waiting for the surprise.. Adventure

Alas!!! I wasnt ragged Come on seniors Thodi Izzat Wali Ragging hi Kar dete

All I got was a great orientation ceremony and amazing chats with my seniors. I felt all alone and home sick when I came to the capital, everything was new to me the people, E- rikshaw, the metro, and what not.

Accommodation was another task but who cares I was living as a paying guest with people from all over country. It was all weird at first but my PG became my second family. After a week in college I made some amazing friends, met some great people, went to new  places.

A year has passed and I wonder how so fast I got to know  the reason why people love the Delhi university. The people here are amazing. Every student is one of a kind, DU has got the best college fest season of kinds celebrity guests, shops, games etc.. In our colleges we dont care what people wear, you can wear a D&G or a Sarojini ka footpath top, no one cares  The life in the university of Delhi will become a part of your life that you will never forget, it will give you memories that you will cherish FOREVER.

Life Beyond #DU by Yashita Jaiswal

Life Beyond DU

Delhi University popularly known as DU is one of the premier University of Delhi with high standard in teaching. But its not only premier institution in capital there is a life beyond DU also.

Delhi has several options where student can look for. Yes its true that DU has brand name but one should persue course in any university which help them and add value to their learning. DU is not only college that offer best learning opportunities to students. Delhi has several other premier institutions also such as the Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIP) and the BR Ambedkar University. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) also offers several undergraduate courses.

Student should try the new upcoming university such as B.R. Ambedkar University. The B.R. Ambedkar University offers specialized courses in the arts and social sciences such as English, psychology, economics and history. Student can also appear for campus placement after completion of their courses through the University placement cell.

For those looking for profession courses at undergraduate level can go for GGSIP University. It  offer plenty of technical and professional courses, including BTech, Bachelor degree in Business Admistration, computer applications, fashion and apparel design , physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology and nursing. IP University as GGSIP is popularly known, admission on the basis of Commom Entrance Test (CET) by the University for almost all the programmes.

Those who want to study in central university can go for JNU or JMI . Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) has cosmopolitan background with student coming from all part of the country and some from abroad . Admission is this University is done on the basis of entrance test and not on the basis of marks that one has obtained in class 12. Jamia offers offbeat courses such as bachelors degree in Dentistry, Fine arts and Turkish, besides conventional subject such as English, psychology and Political science. Student can download forms from the University website , fill in the details and submit them to the respective department in the University .

JNU is the other Central University which is among the best option for undergraduate studies. It is a School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies offers BA programmes and honors courses in foreign language such as Chinese, Spanish, Korean, French, Turkish and Japanese.

So there are plenty of universities, one should take wise decision and then select their college because at the end your talent matter not you college.

#FYUP: A Failed Concept at #DU by Charu Chellani

#FYUP: A Failed Concept

The Siege of Delhi University ended. The campaign started 10 Days and the four year-undergraduate programme is now a history. The protests fell on deaf ears as the DU Administration retreated into the shell, it was perhaps here that the beginning of the end took shape.

Four year undergraduate programme (popularly known as FYUP) was introduced in 2012, which was a move to privatise a public university to enable foreign universities to set up campus in India. FYUP was a boon for the students who wanted to study abroad because in Canada like foreign cities, colleges there need four year undergraduate education but a curse for those students who were not able to study abroad, they have to study four years if they are a student of DU. FYUP was providing bachelor of honours degree and three year graduation programme providing bachelor degree.

In June 2014, UGC sent a legal notice to management, directing the university to immediately scrap FYUP and revert to three year programme. Because of this mess and confusion, the confusion over the admission process in DU, hangs the education future of over 2.5lakhs students. Students were confused and disheartened as no final decision had been taken up so far.

Thoughts about high cut offs are already a tense issue for the students and during scrapping of FYUP, That time they were also facing problems related to their admission procedure.

According to four year undergraduate programme students, they were assured of a world class education, a holistic learning experience, which would improve their prospectus in life ensuring they graduate with a good reputation, but after enrolling for FYUP, students have to sit till 5:00 pm in college for mind numbing classes like for learning balanced diet which no one was interested to attend. Students felt that a lot of their time was being wasted.

No knowledge related to main course subjects and wastage of time on revising fifth standard course was a reason behind scrapping of FYUP.

During reverting of FYUP to three year programme, students of non-maths found difficulty during admissions because after reversion maths was a compulsory subject for honours courses, so many students skipped their favourable honours courses and shifted their interest to another courses, or some dropped year because they did not have any option of taking admission in some other college because it was too late to apply in some other college. B.tech students found difficulty because they need four year graduation but now they are getting three year graduation which has no value.

Course burden has now increased for those students who entered in DU during four year undergraduate programme because now they need to study course of three years in two years.

Students left with many questions..
Why FYUP was introduced?
Wasn't everything checked before launching it?

After all it was a valuable one year to our degree.

In short FYUP was a well-researched scheme. Everything will be better and better after time passes and practice. No one thought to wait and scrapped it which created problems for many students during their admission time.

India needs millions of young educated professionals which will come from university and not from mars.
