So, if you are a fresher seeking admission in a Delhi University college, you ought to be knowing the inside things, so as to make your college life easy going as well as smooth.

1. Somewhere the college name does matter.

You will probably find a bunch of people around you telling you 'beta, ‘naam mein kuch nahi rakha'. The tag does matter to an extent. Okay, now you cannot just choose any course to be in a brand college for God's sake, learn to expound your abilities in the right direction.

2. Hey! Let's be friends.

The people you gel up with at the very beginning of the college will not necessarily be with you till the end. Do not start assuming that you have found true friends. Observe them more and see if you can adjust with them right till the end. Girls, you probably would want to avoid cat fights, won't you?

3. Engage yourself.

The societies of the college are a great way to enhance your talent. You have a chance of making some genuinely good friends from other courses as well. Keep participating in the fests and other programmes organized by the societies and do not forget to check the notice board for information regarding their selection criteria and other activities.

4. College is so unlike school.

Nobody cares if you have turned up for the lectures or not, not even the teachers. You can pass your time anywhere, you can bunk. Don't think we are promoting bunking and preventing you from attending the lectures. If you think you are missing out on some important lectures, you should be attending them.

5. Do marks matter? Not really.

Trust me, you will forget competing for marks like school. Do not misinterpret these words as not studying at all, but it won't matter whether you are a topper or a 40 percenter. Unless you are very passionate about getting admission in a post graduate college based on your graduation score, you won't run after marks. Instead if you like any cultural activity then be a part of it else you can also join organisations outside of college to gain experience.

6. A tug of war between the north and south campus.

There will always be a hidden competition between the north and south DU campuses. Both the sides keep blabbering about the colleges of the other side. And it's okay to listen than to believe. Rumors are rumors at the end of the day.

7. The Groups.

Yes! You may find a lot of groups in the college, from the cool gang to the hot gang, from the nerds to the ones who will start as well as finish their course on the night before the exam, from the crazy loitering ones to the ones who are very reserved. Choose wisely as to with whom you want to be, or do not be with anyone and live your life as a tanha bollywood actor, or repeatedly tell yourself, 'I am the best, YO!'

8. Do not be too conscious of yourself.

People have a whole lot of time to comment upon your looks, your dressing sense, the way you have been keeping your hair. And it would be more evident in a girls college. The trick is to not be so conscious of yourself, you are best at who you are and what you do. You don't owe anything to the people around you. And gradually you will yourself improve in these things once you start going to college regularly.

9. The addas and eating joints.

Every college does have an adda or a meeting point where you will find lots of students sitting and chit-chatting. BYD, QD's, Pizza Hut, Chowringee rolls, Khan Market, Dominos, CCD Taj Palace, you will never get bored of going to such places, and of course hogging with your friends.

Some of the best mouthwatering American Cheese Burgers and Golgappas you’ll have in your life. My special place is BYD in South Campus as it is cheap and the quality is great.

5). No Formals: You must be hearing your friends whining about wearing formals every day and be all neat and tidy. Livin la vida Loca Ji. Freedom to wear whatever you feel comfortable in, whether you are a fashion freak or a lousy unhygienic person, you get the freedom to wear whatever you desire.

Despite all the drama, the admission tension, the heat and the never-ending rat race, one does not miss out on the yummy in their tummy.

“Dude, I have got through Hindu, and you know what? It has some awesome food. The Chole bhature is just out of this world, man!”

“Shut up! Have you even tried JMC ke bhel puri?”

And the battle begins – North Campus vs South Campus!

NORTH CAMPUS-

Chache Di Hatti–(Near MalkaGanj)Chachakecholebhature are absolutely a must. The popularity of this tiny shop can be gauged by the fact that it is heavily crowded and sometimes the shop wraps up before 2 PM. A plate of cholebhature would cost you about 70 bucks which is good for a heavy meal.  And you will come out with a happy tummy J

2.  Tom Uncle’s Maggi Point-Maggi. Slurping already? A plate of Maggi a day, makes one happy and gay.  This joint is well-known for its variety of Maggis, sodas and other snacks that are devoured by hungry students. The cheese masala maggi is one of the most delicious of the lot. A meal for two would cost about Rs. 250

3. Momos Point- And no one can eat just one! No no, I am not promoting Lays; I am talking about the scrumptious juicy momos served at Momos point, located in “Chinese gali”, as the students call it. It serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian momos. This little joint is a hit amongst students.

4. Delhi School of Economics (DSE) Canteen-Known for its Mutton Cutlets and Dosas. D School, as it is popularly known, also houses the famous JP Stall which is a major crowd puller.

5. St Stephen’s Canteen- When talking about good food in Delhi University, how can one afford to miss St Stephen’s ‘cafe’? Students here prefer calling it a Cafe, instead of canteen and they are pretty right in doing so, given the cool ambience and awesome decor. Maggi and Minced cutlets are the most popular among students.

SOUTH CAMPUS-

1.Big Yellow Door (BYD), Satya Niketan - The door isn’t that big. Pun intended. But this place is something really awesome. It’s a hit among the students. From cheesy nachos to BYD’s scrumptious burger, Chocolate Oreo Shake to Pink Lemonade, it’s definitely one of the best places to chill and eat.

2. QD’S-Located in Satya Niketan market, QD’s is one of the most popular eating joints among students. You talk about momos and they will say “QD’s kemomoskhayehaibhai? Top kehai.” Yes, QD’s is famous for its tandoori momos, soups, and chilli potatoes!

3. TAJ CCD-It’s not CCD, its Taj CCD my friend. Café Coffee Day, situated right opposite the elite Taj, is the most famous place for students to bunk their classes and chill here with coffee and some quick snacks. Girls and boys from JMC, Maitreyi, Venky and ARSD are regulars here.

4. Venky’sSouth Indian- Oh! It’s sometimes even better than SagarRatna. No kidding, it’s cheap and most importantly it’s tasty. A plate of vadasambhar can be spotted on each and every table in the canteen.

5. JMC Ke bhelpuri- Street food is what all delhiwalas love. And the JMCites are lucky, for they have a stall right in their college canteen. Bhelpuri and SevPuri, both can be spotted on every second girl’s table. Along with BhelPuri, the college canteen also serves one of the best Iced Tea and samosa, which are quite affordable.

Presently, there are two campus in Delhi university. One is the north campus and other is south campus. The value and the position makes the campus colleges different from the out campus colleges.

NORTH CAMPUS

The North campus maintaining its position and prestigious level to the top. The colleges like Sri Ram college of commerce, St. Stephen , Hansraj, etc. The students who have scored maximum marks in their previous exam wants to join these top colleges because of the best placement by the best firms of India.The competition for admission into all north campus colleges of university of Delhi is extremely fierce. The reason is that the students who are passed out from their school. They want get admission in popular and well known colleges.

SOUTH CAMPUS

South campus is the second hand of the Delhi university. Colleges like Delhi college of Art and Commerce, Atma ram santaran dharma college, College of vocational studies etc, are some of the college that make the south campus of the Delhi university. This campus is well known for excellence in life sciences with departments like moleculor biology, Microbiology, biochemistry and also professional studies with departments like business economics and financial studies. South campus also provided the hostels(pg's) for outer students and also for the girls safety.

OUT OF CAMPUS COLLEGES

Out of campus colleges are not counted in the campus colleges but all are affiliated from delhi university. These are some colleges like Janki devi memorial college, Bharti college, Kalindi college Bhagini nivedita college etc, under delhi university are the extended off campus colleges.

The major drawbacks of out of campus colleges are the transportation problem. Especially for the girls safety. Because the most colleges of delhi university are situated at the outer region in delhi. There are lack of hostel facility for girls and boys. Hence, the off campus colleges are lack behind the colleges compared to south and north campus

If I was a book,I would like to be a library book, so I would be taken home by all different kinds of people - Cornelia Funke.

The library connects us with the insight and knowledge. Libraries store the energy that fuels our imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspires us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life. For some, libraries are just buildings having thousands of books but for some, a library is the delivery room for the birth of ideas, a place where history comes to life.

The library of Jawahar Lal Nehru University{JNU}, South campus library, Central library, Arts library. These libraries serve their readers with thousands of books of their interests. 

North Campus college libraries are also of worth for students. St.Stephens college is famous for its library, which also houses a collection of rare sanskrit and persian manuscripts.

The South Campus Library, University of Delhi facilitates access for South Delhi residents. A four storey building, in beautiful surrounding at the centre of the campus, offers an congenial environment for study and research. The total sitting capacity is about 275 seats, with reading halls on all the floor along with the collection.

Library Hours: 

Monday to Friday – 9:00 am to 7.30 pm

Saturday – 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

The JNU Library has resources rich in Social Sciences, Humanities and Sciences and provides access to books, journals, reports, online databases, e-books, electronic theses and dissertations. The  library is the “centre of knowledge” of JNU. The nine storey building is surrounded by lush, glossy green trees. It is the highest tower of the campus.

For those who love to be in the  midst of books, these libraries will give treat to their imagination.

They are know for their dirt cheap sheeshas and cooperative staff. They food is simple and hygienic. Overall a nice place to sit, chat and fun with your friends or the special one. ;)

Yes, booze is fun and it's okay to indulge in it once in a while but too much anything isn't good, no matter if it's something as good as alcohol. Life is a bitch, deal with it !

Pay Attention

More essential than any note-taking strategy is paying attention.Focus on what the instructor is presenting, and make an effort to learn the material right then and there:

1. Sit in a place where you can see and hear the professor clearly - the front of class is usually best (it's okay to be a nerd!).
2. Clear your space of any distractions that could prevent you from focusing on the class.
3. If you're taking notes on a computer, turn off your wireless connection so you're not tempted to go online.

Take Good Notes in Class 

Remember that you're a student, not a court reporter. You don't need to write down every word the instructor says.Write in phrases, not whole sentences, and use abbreviations to save time and hand cramps. Here are some of the things you'll typically want to include in your notes:

1. Info the professor puts on the board.
2. Facts you need to memorize, like names and dates.
3. Formulas you need to know, particularly in math or science courses.

Take Good Notes on Readings

No, no one goes to college carrying a single notebook in their hands. It only happens in Karan Johar’s movies or may be if you reside in college premises. There is so much you need to carry, your books, assignments, water bottle, umbrella, deodorant, scarf , wallet and of course your make up! Hence a big durable bag with lots of pocket should be on top of your shopping list.

Flip flops 

From canteen to classes, from classes to corridors, from corridors to cinema halls, from cinema halls to cafes, you need to running around. From one place to another. Changing one metro for another. And in these times flip flops come to your savoir; they are not only super comfortable but also let your feet breathe. From flat to platform ones, markets are flooded with flip flops in every hue and color.

Sunglasses 

Along with being great fashion accessories, sunglasses also protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.  Pick one according to your face’s shape and size and up the oomph factor.

There are times when we have to attend a few formal meetings, deliver presentations, appear for interviews and a simple , formal, crisp shirt is enough to take care of all that and makes sure you look a little less messy and well, well mannered.

Though these are a few important essentials what matters the most in every aspect of life is your confidence.

An adequate amount of confidence and a positive approach are the keys to achieve your goal (and they'll also make up for all the trendy clothes you don't own.)

The Path to success is never easy

Delhi University stands for excellence and brilliance.Its the mecca for learning the way of life. The immense popularity that DU enjoys in the country and overseas presently, is hugely responsible for the maddening rush every year at the admissions time. I vividly recall my time in 2014 as a baffled teenager, unknown to the ways of the world, arriving at the famed campus.

It intrigued me! 

The endless hour's lines.
The crowd. 
The gamut of admission seekers. 
The very charm of it all was over whelming. 

The appealing introduction about the college from volunteers and favour in knowing the college premises seems a relief in an unknown crowd. 

The authorities do need to take certain strategic decisions and implement them in order to smoothen the process for the aspirants.

With every passing year, the rush for admissions is increasing by leaps and bounds along with the cut offs. The lucky few get the college and the course of their choice, whereas, others have to settle down for different and perhaps not so likeable options available.


The on campus residence being extremely limited is also another issue of concern for non-delhiites for which they have to run an extra mile.

Admissions at DU is an amazing experience.

When we are fresh out of 12th class with sweet bitter feelings we await our results and once we have it. We turn to the next phase of our lives "college".

Then it all begins, the desperation to get in, going colleges to college, praying day and night that you made the cut. You know what you got, there's no hope for maybe now, it's time to face the hard truth and decide!

Decide what do you want to do with your life, who do you want to be for the rest of your life, a doctor, an engineer, an artist, a journalist or something else entirely.

It's a lot of pressure and you may feel overwhelmed.

But you know what you'll get through it you'll and you know how I know because  I got in as well.

In addition to that, you can have best of both worlds by attending the major fests and events in campus colleges at the peak celebration time.

Preference to faculty than peer members: One should not judge his/her options according to the crowd or the infrastructure but lay emphasis on the faculty and facilities in the college. Even if the crowd is not happening or intellectual the facilities in the college with help you sharpen your skills. My Freshmen Year….

My first year in University of Delhi was like a roller coaster ride full of surprises, ups and downs, love, adventures and fear.

Getting into DU was like a dream come true, I always dreamt of studying into this kind of university. Being an outstation student it was a bit more difficult for me than all the Delhiites.

The Cut-off Day came and I was through.. Yippiee!!!! Now it was simple for me.. Book tickets and the campus walk as a DU FUCHA was not far away.

But it was not that easy. Trains…. Reservations…. Well Well…. Almost whole India can tell you about the great mystery of booking railway tickets. And as it happened… Here comes the twist…

No reservation???

So what…

The passion to be a part of Delhi University was enough to keep me motivated throughout the journey.

I somehow managed to reach Delhi from Lucknow, the city of Nawabs (without reservation). This journey on track is unforgettable as I kept hopping across the train for seat.

Reached Delhi and here was the day to complete my admission formalities.

After standing in a long never ending line I got in. the college was opening on the 21st July. I was excited and scared.  Scared by the fact that I’ll get ragged, I didn't know what they will do to me. But deep inside I was waiting for the surprise.. Adventure…

Alas!!! I wasn’t ragged… Come on seniors… Thodi Izzat Wali Ragging hi Kar dete…

All I got was a great orientation ceremony and amazing chats with my seniors. I felt all alone and home sick when I came to the capital, everything was new to me the people, E- rikshaw, the metro, and what not.

Accommodation was another task but who cares… I was living as a paying guest with people from all over country. It was all weird at first but my PG became my second family. After a week in college I made some amazing friends, met some great people, went to new  places.

A year has passed and I wonder how so fast I got to know  the reason why people love the Delhi university. The people here are amazing. Every student is one of a kind, DU has got the best college fest season of kinds celebrity guests, shops, games etc.. In our colleges we don’t care what people wear, you can wear a D&G or a Sarojini ka footpath top, no one cares…  The life in the university of Delhi will become a part of your life that you will never forget, it will give you memories that you will cherish FOREVER.

Life Beyond DU

Delhi University popularly known as DU is one of the premier University of Delhi with high standard in teaching. But its not only premier institution in capital there is a life beyond DU also.

Delhi has several options where student can look for. Yes its true that DU has brand name but one should persue course in any university which help them and add value to their learning. DU is not only college that offer best learning opportunities to students. Delhi has several other premier institutions also such as the Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIP) and the BR Ambedkar University. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) also offers several undergraduate courses.

Student should try the new upcoming university such as B.R. Ambedkar University. The B.R. Ambedkar University offers specialized courses in the arts and social sciences such as English, psychology, economics and history. Student can also appear for campus placement after completion of their courses through the University placement cell.

For those looking for profession courses at undergraduate level can go for GGSIP University. It  offer plenty of technical and professional courses, including BTech, Bachelor degree in Business Admistration, computer applications, fashion and apparel design , physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology and nursing. IP University as GGSIP is popularly known, admission on the basis of Commom Entrance Test (CET) by the University for almost all the programmes.

Those who want to study in central university can go for JNU or JMI . Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) has cosmopolitan background with student coming from all part of the country and some from abroad . Admission is this University is done on the basis of entrance test and not on the basis of marks that one has obtained in class 12. Jamia offers offbeat courses such as bachelors degree in Dentistry, Fine arts and Turkish, besides conventional subject such as English, psychology and Political science. Student can download forms from the University website , fill in the details and submit them to the respective department in the University .

JNU is the other Central University which is among the best option for undergraduate studies. It is a School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies offers BA programmes and honors courses in foreign language such as Chinese, Spanish, Korean, French, Turkish and Japanese.

So there are plenty of universities, one should take wise decision and then select their college because at the end your talent matter not you college.

#FYUP: A Failed Concept

The Siege of Delhi University ended. The campaign started 10 Days and the four year-undergraduate programme is now a history. The protests fell on deaf ears as the DU Administration retreated into the shell, it was perhaps here that the beginning of the end took shape.

Four year undergraduate programme (popularly known as FYUP) was introduced in 2012, which was a move to privatise a public university to enable foreign universities to set up campus in India. FYUP was a boon for the students who wanted to study abroad because in Canada like foreign cities, colleges there need four year undergraduate education but a curse for those students who were not able to study abroad, they have to study four years if they are a student of DU. FYUP was providing bachelor of honours degree and three year graduation programme providing bachelor degree.

In June 2014, UGC sent a legal notice to management, directing the university to immediately scrap FYUP and revert to three year programme. Because of this mess and confusion, the confusion over the admission process in DU, hangs the education future of over 2.5lakhs students. Students were confused and disheartened as no final decision had been taken up so far.

Thoughts about high cut offs are already a tense issue for the students and during scrapping of FYUP, That time they were also facing problems related to their admission procedure.

According to four year undergraduate programme students, they were assured of a world class education, a holistic learning experience, which would improve their prospectus in life ensuring they graduate with a good reputation, but after enrolling for FYUP, students have to sit till 5:00 pm in college for mind numbing classes like for learning balanced diet which no one was interested to attend. Students felt that a lot of their time was being wasted.

No knowledge related to main course subjects and wastage of time on revising fifth standard course was a reason behind scrapping of FYUP.

During reverting of FYUP to three year programme, students of non-maths found difficulty during admissions because after reversion maths was a compulsory subject for honours courses, so many students skipped their favourable honours courses and shifted their interest to another courses, or some dropped year because they did not have any option of taking admission in some other college because it was too late to apply in some other college. B.tech students found difficulty because they need four year graduation but now they are getting three year graduation which has no value.

Course burden has now increased for those students who entered in DU during four year undergraduate programme because now they need to study course of three years in two years.

Students left with many questions..

Why FYUP was introduced?

Wasn't everything checked before launching it?

After all it was a valuable one year to our degree.

In short FYUP was a well-researched scheme. Everything will be better and better after time passes and practice. No one thought to wait and scrapped it which created problems for many students during their admission time.

India needs millions of young educated professionals which will come from university and not from mars.
